The Royal Wedding - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

WASHINGTON, April 29, 2011 — It is just after 8:00 am in London and all is abuzz as the guests start to arrive at Westminster Abbey for the wedding of Prince William and Catherine, whom The Queen has bestowed the titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

3:26 a.m.  The doors of Westminster Abbey are open and the London Chamber Choir music is being broadcast and the first guests are expected to arrive.

3:31 a.m.  The Abbey is tweeting! The guests are arriving and there are some great hats. No one notable just yet.  The Abbey is fabulous - ornate and regal. 

3:37 a.m. Besides hats, women opt to wear what they call a fascinator—a hair ornament that can be made of feathers, fake flowers or netting"  They are quite fashionable right now, and Catherine (as she will be called from now on) prefers them. 

3:40 a.m. I would be pretty upset if one of those matrons in a giant hat sat in front of me!

Out of the 1,900 guests expected, more than fifty of them are from the British Royal family (but Fergie has been snubbed). In attendance from the family will be The Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Henry of Wales. 

About 200 guests are from the government, parliament and diplomatic corps, as well as sixty governors-general and realm prime-ministers, around 30 members of the defence service, and approximately 80 guests from Prince William’s charities.

Foreign royal families include the Prince and Princess of the Asturias, the Crown Prince of Bahrain, the Queen of Denmark, Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde of Belgium, the Crown Prince and Princess of the Netherlands and the King and Queen of Norway.

Notable guests include David and Victoria Beckham, Sir Elton John, a friend of Prince Wlliam's mother Princess Diana, actor Rowan Atkinson, director Guy Ritchie, singer Joss Stone, photographer Mario Testino, who took the above portrait, and socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.

3:48 a.m.  I remember watching the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer (where Catherine is a 'commoner,' Diana was royalty, as her father was the Earl of Spencer), and it was an incredible affair.  The were married February 21, 1981 and her dress was so over the top and incredible to see as she emerged from the carriage. 

Lady Diana was transported to the wedding in the Royal Carriage, much like Cinderella's carriage. As Catherine is not 'royalty,' she will arrive in a limousine.
