The machine tools had gone silent. A different sound emanated from behind the doors of the carpentry room in the William M. Davies Jr. Career and Technical High School. It carried the hints of a groove.

Inside that room, for several months, students have gathered on Wednesday afternoons for a special project: building their own electric guitars.

Along the way, senior Eli Hebert, of North Providence, who liked applying visual creativity to the design, says he built bonds as much as a guitar, with friends, but also with classmates he hadn’t known well before.

Another student, Jason Johnson of Cranston, whose guitar-playing ranges from the “James Bond” theme to classic rock to hard rock, showed classmates how to put on strings, which knobs to turn and how to play chords.

Some students arrived with some familiarity with guitars. Others are studying electronics, graphic design or other technical fields. But beyond building instruments, the class would confront a wholly different challenge: music.

The class is designed to combine science, engineering and mathematics, said Bernard Blumenthal, a Davies spokesman.

Over the past several years, state education officials and economic-development people have tried to increase the numbers of students who pursue science, technology, engineering and math –– the STEM initiative. The hope is that students pursue those courses in college and enter fields that could help Rhode Island’s economy find its rhythm.

At this high school, where the 850 students took an entrance exam and must meet requirements in core academics and in 1 of 12 technical focuses, young people hail from across northern Rhode Island.

A small number of students joined two sections of the guitar-making program, a class offered for the first time this year with instruction from teachers Albert DiFazio and Bill Esser.

DiFazio, who plays guitar, piano and organ and teaches robotics at the school, says the idea for the program came from a Purdue University program. But he pledges to take it further: his students will learn to play something.

In the beginning, everything is in pieces.

One class of a dozen or more students receives a kit that includes a slab of wood that has been shaped like a guitar and has places to install electronic wiring, various sound knobs and other parts. Eventually, they attach the neck, where a guitarist places fingers to select notes and form chords, the building blocks of music.
