Lord of the ring pops the question
Mark Seneca couldn't afford the wedding ring he wanted to buy for his girlfriend, Nicole McQuay, so he did what any enterprising boyfriend would do.
He entered a contest.
The Mt. Washington couple triumphed on Saturday over hundreds of duos who competed in the Henne Jewelers Diamond Dash, a two-hour scavenger hunt in Pittsburgh that rewarded the winners with a 1.6-carat Mark Patterson diamond ring worth $15,000.
When Seneca, 30, and McQuay, 29, ascended a stage at Bar Louie in Station Square to accept the ring from owner John Henne, Seneca dropped to one knee and proposed in front of hundreds of cheering competitors in what became an impromptu engagement party.
"We've been talking about getting engaged, but I told him, 'You don't have to do it today,'" said McQuay, a product specialist with UPMC Health Plan. "But I guess we are now, so there's really no turning back!"
Seneca, a bartender, read aloud part of a letter he wrote to the contest organizers that said, "I could not afford a ring as beautiful as she."
The two have been dating for seven years. Seneca had planned to propose as part of a 30th birthday surprise for McQuay, but he said the contest was a more adventurous opportunity. The couple entered last year but didn't win.
"We knew what to expect," he said.
"But we were totally surprised we won," she said.
McQuay said she prepared by studying the locations and placards of Golden Triangle landmarks such Point State Park, Market Square and the Henry W. Oliver Building. To win, contestants had to answer trivia and math questions about the landmarks via text messages.
It was organized by Scvngr, a Cambridge, Mass., company that does promotional events for jewelers and car dealerships willing put up cash or prizes worth $10,000 or more.
