Problems with story problems

A train leaves the station at 5 p.m. traveling east at a speed of 35 miles per hour. If a second train leaves a station 100 miles away heading west at a speed of 55 miles per hour, how long will it take for you to run screaming from the room, cursing the existence of story problems?

Math. It's something we all use every day. Although I have not once in my adult life been called upon to know the value of Pi, I'm the first to agree that knowing how much you're paying for that cute skirt when it's marked 30 percent off is, indeed, a critical life skill. For me, the world seems to be divided into two categories; those who can calculate the correct change from a $20 before the cashier rings up the sale, and those like myself, who keep the calculator industry strong.

My husband and I married for love, but to be honest, it would have made a good match on paper as well. I had a background in journalism and English, he majored in accounting. Throw in the fact that his family has excellent teeth, and I'd have signed on before the dowry was collected.

I'm very practical that way.

It is the unwritten rule in our home that homework support is allocated as follows:

» For assistance with English, foreign language, or help with your term paper, report to mom.

» For math and science, go directly to your dad.

As a matter of fact, I believe I changed it to a written rule last fall, when a wayward child attempted to solicit my advice regarding sine, cosine and tangent.

Homework designation avoids needless stress for both parent and child. It suits us perfectly; unless or until, someone goes out of town. Which is where I found myself last month, when my child presented me with a worksheet on improper fractions. Trying to subdue a rising tide of panic, I reminded myself that the math homework often comes with a parent-friendly guide.

So, I glanced over the multiple-step directions, quickly surmising that one would need at least a passing knowledge of the previous math units, upon which the current task had been scaffolded.

No help there.

Which brings us to the point in my story in which I would like to pause, to sincerely and passionately thank the creators of the search engine Google. I made it through the division of fractions that evening, to paraphrase Madonna, somehow I made it through. But it was a humbling experience, and I went to bed that evening wondering about how such an otherwise capable adult (I'm referring to myself here) could be so utterly, embarrassingly, inept when it comes to mathematics.
